Whichever place in Himachal Pradesh you may head to, you will always feel
the past colonial charm revolving around. Besides, there are places which
will truly make you reminisce the Tibetan atmosphere.
Climate
The varying altitudes affect the climatic conditions of the state much. The
conditions range from hot and sub-humid tropical in the souther low-lying
areas to cold alpine and glacial in the norther and high-altitude areas of
the east. March to June is the summer period while winter extends from
October to February. Monsoons hit the state in July and continue till the
month of September. With the arrival of monsoons, the whole landscape seems
to have sprung to life. February, March and April are the most pleasant
months of the year.
Important Cities & Towns
The erstwhile summer refuge of the British, Shimla is the capital of
Himachal Pradesh. A famous holiday retreat for travellers, the charms of the
British Raj can still be felt here. Yet another site to soak up the
Victorian splendour is Dalhousie. McLeod Ganj is a chief Buddhist centre in
the state. Other important cities include Kullu, Dharamshala, Manali, Mandi,
Mundi etc.
People & Culture

Almost
ninety percent of the state's population (Hindus forming the majority)
dwells in villages and small towns. Buddhist inhabit the areas that lie
close to the Chinese border. Agriculture is the main source of earning a
livelihood for people in the state. Terraced field and small two-storey
houses make up the rural scene. The huge congregation, organised at Kullu,
on the occasion of Dussehra, serves as a perfect window to the village
culture. The folk songs of Himachal Pradesh also hold great charm for
visitors. These traditional ballads usually have a religious or romantic
theme. Visiting the village fairs is the best option to be witness to it
all. Pahari is the regional dialect of the state. English and Hindi are the
major languages spoken here.
Famous Travel Attractions
While in Himachal Pradesh, you have plenty of attractions to explore and

lined with numerous sovenir and curio shops. Other attractions in the city
include the Viceregal Lodge, Gaiety Theater, Jakhoo Temple, Tara Devi
Temple, Lakkar Bazaar etc. You can also plan your trip to the closely
located picture-postcard hill towns of Kufri and Naldehra. Dharamshala is
known for being the abode of His Holiness Dalai Lama and the Tibetan

Air/ Rail/ Road Links
Bhuntar, Gaggal and Jubbarhati are three airports in the state, with
regular flights of Indian Airlines connecting to Delhi and Chandigarh. Due
to high altitude and rugged landscapes, the state doesn't boast a
well-established rail route. The longest rail-track joins Joginder Nagar in
Himachal Pradesh with Pathankot in Punjab. The state is served by a good
network of roads. However, frequent snowfalls and landslides makes some of
these road-routes inaccessible.
