Udaipur
Overview

Often
known as the most romantic city, Udaipur never faced the shortage of
superlatives for it. The city is also called the city of lakes, for there
are many placid blue lakes here which add to the charm of the place. Udaipur
was founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1568 and the place has come a long
way since then as it has steadily grown in popularity among the tourists
domestic as well as international. Located in the north western corner of
India, Udaipur is full of palaces, temples and mansions of all kinds that
range from modest to extravagant. The place has also served as a hub for the
performing arts, paintings and crafts as the artists enjoyed royal patronage
during the medieval period.
Climate and Best Time
The climate of Udaipur is tropical, though when compared to other places in
Rajasthan it appears very pleasant. During the summers the temperature goes
up to 38 degrees Celsius whereas the minimum temperature touches 28 degrees
Celsius. During winters the maximum temperature goes up to 29 degrees
Celsius whereas the minimum temperature touches 12 degrees Celsius. The
months from September to March are the best months for visiting Udaipur.
Places to Visit
» Jagdish Temple
It is an Indo Aryan temple which is located towards the north of the
City Palace entrance. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu as
Jagannath. There is a shrine in the front of the temple where a brass image
of Garuda is installed.
» Jag Mandir Palace

It
is an island palace which is made of yellow sandstone inlaid with marble.
The palace is available for holding social functions.
» City Palace and Museum
It is a remarkable construction located in the heart of the city which
overlooks the Lake Pichola. The construction was started by Maharana Udai
Singh though the successive rulers continuously added to the structure
though you won't notice any inconsistency in the construction. The old part
of the palace has now been turned into a museum where antiques related to
the royal past of the place are on display.
» Lake Palace
This palace is set in the midst of Lake Pichola and it appears as if it is
floating on the surface of water. Today it has been converted into a
heritage hotel.
» Fateh Sagar Lake
Located to the north of Pichola lake, the Fateh Sagar lake was constructed
by Maharana Jai Singh. It needed to be reconstructed by Maharana Fateh Singh
after the dam was destroyed by heavy rains. There is a garden island in the
middle whereas there is a cafe on the banks shaped like a boat. Boating
facilities are also available here.

Getting There
The Dabok Airport of Udaipur is located about 21 km away from the city
centre. Daily flights connect Udaipur with Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mumbai and
Delhi. Udaipur is located in the Western Railway network and its railway
station is about 4 km away from the city centre. All the major cities such
as Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer and Jodhpur are connected with the Udaipur by the
railways.
A major road link connecting Mumbai and Delhi passes through the city of
Udaipur. Regular buses operate between Udaipur and other cities connecting
the city with the rest of the region.
